An Interview with Mark Armstrong

Biblica: Mark, can you tell us the organization that you work for, and the role that you have?

I am an Associate Missionary working with SIM (Serving in Mission) Zimbabwe, and in December 2019 I took over the role of LEARN Zimbabwe Project Manager.

Biblica: Please tell us about LEARN?

Mark: LEARN stands for Leaders Equipping and Resourcing Network and we are working to provide pastors with the resources they need to better understand and teach the gospel.  Currently working in Zimbabwe, but there is great potential to expand to other nations and to partner with other organisations.

Biblica: How are you doing this, and explain to us the context for pastors working in Zimbabwe.

Mark: The context the pastors are working in is a difficult one.  There is a lot of false teaching in Zimbabwe, alongside which other religions are rapidly growing.

To help equip pastors, we are giving them a tablet loaded with up to 50 books, and we have developed a platform that is both web and app based, designed to resource them so that they can teach and explain the Bible accurately and confidently. The app also helps the leaders provide ongoing pastoral support by providing information about who is reading what and how the teaching programmes are being used.  The app also provides great information for partner organisations allowing them to see how their resources are being used.

Biblica: How have Biblica been involved?

Mark: A vital aspect of the app is the integration of the bible interfacing with all resources on the app. Research with Zimbabwean church leaders revealed their desire to access the NIV translation of the Bible.  We knew that Biblica hold the license for the NIV translation and we first presented the vision to Biblica at the World CBMC Convention in Belfast in 2018.

Biblica immediately grasped the vision of LEARN to resource and equip church leaders and became one of the valued partners in the project, along with Langham Publishing, Crossway, 10ofThose, SPCK, ACTS, TGC and LEARN Global.

Biblica: How have things progressed in recent months?

Mark: In June 2019 we piloted the app in Harare and Mutare with a number of church leaders, and following on from this, using some very useful feedback, we were able to train 50 leaders. To date 90 tablets with the app have been distributed to church leaders in Zimbabwe.

Biblica: What are you planning for 2020?

Mark: We have a vision to distribute a further 400 tablets in 2020 to church leaders in other parts of Zimbabwe – Bulawayo, Masvingo and Chitungwiza. In addition, other nations have shown a keen interest, so we are excited to see where else it can be used across the world.

Biblica: Can you share a particular story where you have seen God’s word having an impact?

Mark: One of the early recipients of the tablet and app was a Pastor Philip Matsatswa (United Baptist Church). Since June 2019 Pastor Philip has been using the electronic library to teach his church, including a pre-service Sunday School class. The Pastor is also engaged in planting six new churches. The new resource has been used to prepare the teams who are involved in starting these new churches.  We are greatly encouraged to hear how Pastor Philip has been using the resources ensuring the bible is at the centre of these churches.

Biblica: thank you Mark – we look forward to hearing how this exciting innovation develops….

Maintaining Church Community

Throughout church history, there are very rare instances where the people of God did not gather together regularly. These moments represented specific, overarching cultural situations that made it advisable for people in groups of any size to not gather together. COVID-19 is another example of a culturally singular moment that necessitates the decision for Christians not to hold their weekly church services and to do so knowing that they are not being unfaithful to the commands of Christ.

(R. Albert Mohler)

It could be argued that Sunday 22nd March 2020 was the most unusual Sunday in the history of Christianity. To contain the spread of COVID-19, many churches across the world were not allowed to meet or decided to take a break from meeting.

In response a lot of churches streamed services online for the first time. It was great to see the global church responding this way. Providing a way for people to connect and worship.  However, there are concerns about maintaining an ongoing sense of community during this time.  Questions are being asked about how the church continues to be the church when people cannot physically be together.

To assist churches, many organisations are providing ideas and resources.  At Biblica, we want to encourage you to consider Community Bible Experience.

What is Community Bible Experience?

“A REVOLUTIONARY WAY TO GATHER TOGETHER AND READ THE BIBLE, ENCOURAGING REGULAR, MEANINGFUL ENGAGEMENT WITH GOD’S WORD.”

Community Bible Experience (CBE) is simple but revolutionary, taking away verse numbers, chapter numbers and all the other things that interrupt the text of the Bible it invites people to read a whole section of the Bible all the way through.  And it encourages people to do this in community – more like a book club than a Bible study.

You can read a lot more about it by clicking on the link below where you can see the resources available and find stories of groups who have already begun their CBE journey:  https://www.biblicaeurope.com/our-work/community-bible-experience/introduction.

It sounds good, but we can’t meet together?

What we are suggesting at this time is that groups of people get together online, through platforms for video calls, for example Zoom (zoom.us), to maintain community and continue to fellowship together.  This may be small groups that are already meeting for Bible study or prayer. Or this might be a new experience, a new opportunity, for some.  For many, with the normal church programme on hold, now is time to try something different.

So if you are a church leader, please consider if you want to recommend this to your people.  Or perhaps as an individual you just want to get a group of friends together and begin your CBE journey.

We understand that everything that is going on at this time may evoke a sense of fear. The truth is that all of us will face fear and hardships in life. We want to encourage you to take comfort in the words of Jesus.

“In  this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” John 16:33 (NIV)

Bibles to Madeira

Madeira Island is the largest of the Madeira group of Islands which have a combined population of less than 300,000.  It is a popular tourist destination, with approximately 1.4 million visitors every year. In June 2019 a small mission team, resourced with New Testaments from Biblica were among those visiting the Island.

Recently we caught up with David Whalley who was part of the team.  David and several others from around the UK, had become part of the team in response to an appeal from Jason Murfitt.  Jason Murfitt and his wife Andrea recently returned to the UK having spent twelve years as missionaries in Brazil.  Over the past year Jason, through Grace Baptist Mission, has been scoping out the possibility of moving to Madeira to plant a church there.

David explained that Jason’s heart for Madeira was much inspired by the work of Dr. Robert Reid Kalley, a Scottish Presbyterian missionary, who went to the Island in 1838, and as he preached the gospel, more than 2000 people responded in following Jesus!

From his initial visits to Madeira, Jason identified a real need for bibles and other Christian resources on the Island, and so he put a call out for a Mission Team to go to Madeira to take some resources and share the gospel.  As part of the team, David was given the role of sourcing Bibles to take and he contacted Biblica, subsequently obtaining 200 English New Testaments.

The New Testaments were distributed among tourists and to 60 hotels on the island who were really open to having them in their lounges and reception areas.  David said that “We continue to pray that these New Testaments are being used by God to speak to the recipients who read them, and that they may be led to the Lord Jesus”.

David shared a story from the only day they had rain on the trip which took them into an indoor market where Cherry, another member of the team, got to chat with a Doctor from Brazil, and was able to give her a bible and other resources.  This conversation has continued online and the team have asked for prayer for Dr. Ana that she would continue to ask questions and come to faith.

Dave and the rest of the mission team, were able to share the good news of the gospel with many people, and in follow up to this Jason has been able to return to the Island and meet up with some who now desperately want to have Christian fellowship and very much look forward to joining an evangelical church.

At Biblica Europe we are delighted to have played a small part in this mission, helping to provide resources which may help to spark another response to the gospel as seen in the 1800s.

Supporting Book Aid

Within Biblica Europe, we are delighted to work with a range of partner ministries and publishers across the UK, Europe and further afield. We regularly receive sample bibles from these ministries which we keep for archive purposes. But from time to time we are delighted to be able to pass on some of these to other ministries working in the UK and beyond. This is the second story about a ministry who are doing fantastic work getting the Word of God into the hands of those who need it. This time we catch up with Sharon Wilson from the Shankill Community Fellowship in Belfast.

Shankill Community Fellowship is a Gospel outreach project sponsored by Baptist Missions Ireland.  The Shankill Road in Belfast and the surrounding areas were some of the most deeply affected by the violence of “The Troubles” in Northern Ireland. It is recognised as one of the most deprived areas in Europe.

Working in the heart of this community, the Fellowship has been serving the local people since 2009 to help make the Bible apply to people living in this part of Belfast.

Sharon Wilson is part of a small leadership team of three in the Fellowship, working as an Associate Volunteer Missionary.

Speaking about the Bibles they received from Biblica, Sharon said “Each Bible is prayerfully given out. They are an invaluable resource to us, as a Bible wouldn’t be at the top of the list of things for people to buy. It is an absolute privilege to be able to give out God’s Word in this way.”

One of the ways that Shankill Community Fellowship (SCF) serve the local community is by regularly having a table outside of their premises which has clothes, and other essentials, that people are able to stop at and take whatever they need.  Very often people will have conversations with Sharon and others, which results in the offer of a Bible, which more often than not is accepted.

One particular story stands out in Sharon’s mind “A lady had been coming to SCF for a while, and we got into conversation one day. I asked her if she had a Bible and she said no. I sensitively explained to her about the NIrV and she said she would accept one. A week or two later, she arrived back, and in her words said…’That’s the first time I’ve understood the Bible’. She had started learning the books of the Bible, so we made her some cards with the books of the Bible on them and numbered them on the back in case she dropped them.  There’s much, much more to the story……The change in this lady is remarkable!”

Sharon says that she counts it an absolute privilege to be a small part of the work God is doing on the Shankill.

In Biblica Europe we count it a privilege to be able to support Sharon and Shankill Community Fellowship in their work in this community.

Supporting The Seamen’s Christian Friend Society

Within Biblica Europe, we are delighted to work with a range of partner ministries and publishers across the UK, Europe and further afield. We regularly receive sample bibles from these ministries which we keep for archive purposes. But from time to time we are delighted to be able to pass on some of these to other ministries working in the UK and beyond. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing stories of three different ministries who are doing fantastic work getting the Word of God into the hands of those who need it.  Below you can read more about the Bibles that went to The Seamen’s Christian Friend Society.

Sam Cowan, Seamen’s Christian Friend Society (SCFS), is the Port Chaplain/Missionary for the Ports in Belfast, Warrenpoint and Larne.  The 1st November 2019 marked 20 years in this role for Sam, though the Society has been offering the hand of friendship to the seafaring community for much longer, since 1846.  Their missionaries go on board ships when they come into harbour and spend time with the sailors, talking to them about spiritual issues and helping to address their physical and emotional welfare.

SCFS have had an ongoing relationship with Biblica Europe over several years.  Speaking about the Bibles Sam said “Many of the folks that I meet come from all around the world. Patrick Johnstone (Operation World) told us that, as a Society, we were working with an unreached people group (seafarers). Many come from lands where the church is persecuted. It is a blessing to give a seafarer a Bible. Some take them to improve their English, others ask for the Bible to help them search for the meaning of life.  It is a particular delight when we are able to give someone a Bible in their own language.”

In more recent years, Belfast has become a destination for cruise ships.  In 2019, approximately 150 cruise ships and an estimated 285,000 visitors dock in Belfast.

On one occasion, when Sam had boarded one of these cruise ships, a lady saw a booklet in her own language. Sam said that she could have it and also offered her a Bible in her language.  Recounting her reaction, Sam said “Her face lit up.  She was overjoyed.  She went back to the table she was sitting at and said, “I cannot believe that I left my country of Romania to come to Belfast to get a Bible!””.

As it happened the person she was sitting beside, a man from the Philippines, was a Christian and he invited the lady to come to a Bible Fellowship meeting on Sunday.

Sam can tell many stories of seafarers and members of their families who have put their faith in Jesus as a result of that seafarer receiving a Bible.  It is not unusual for seafarers to come to Sam asking for Bibles for themselves and for their wives and family.  Some of the Bibles have gone to Bible Fellowships on board ship for new attendees, so that they too can have a Bible.

“Working with Biblica is very important to The Seamen’s Christian Friend Society as otherwise we would struggle to fulfil our role getting the Word of Life into the hands of the seafarers that visit our ports. In Touch Ministries have this saying which is my prayer and summarises what I desire to do in our Ports. “We want to touch the World with the Word of God. We do so because we are Motivated by a Passion for God and a Compassion for people.”

Within Biblica Europe, we are delighted to know that Bibles which would otherwise be sitting on our shelves, have gone far from our own shores through the amazing work of The Seamen’s Christian Friend Society.

Jennifer’s story

Imagine if you spent years not having a Bible you could call your own? Imagine being expected to engage with a Bible that you struggle to read because either the text was too small, the pages too thin, the colour of paper not right or the language not clear?

Meet Jennifer. Jennifer has spent years not having a Bible that she can call her own. Her mother has spent years trying to find a Bible that was suitable for her.

So much work is being done across our schools and in our secular community to serve the needs of those with intellectual needs or visual impairment, however the Church has fallen far behind. It is not acceptable for everyone to be given the same Bible, regardless of their needs, and be expected to engage with it.

For us at Biblica, accessing the Word of God is our whole mission. So, it is incredibly exciting to be working on a project to present the Word of God in a format that really is accessible to those with additional needs.

This is the first Bible that we can say yes we have got it, and we are delighted!

Watch this video to hear Jennifer’s story and find out how lives are being transformed through Biblica’s NIrV Accessible Edition of the New Testament.

Andrew’s story

This Bible has given me an accessibility to God’s Word which simply wasn’t available to me before. It has fundamentally changed my attitude to interacting with Scripture.

These are the words of a young man called Andrew when we asked for his thoughts on the NIrV Accessible Edition. Andrew has spent years trying to find a Bible he can study and engage with, but due to his dyslexia reading God’s Word became one of the most frustrating aspects of his faith.

10% of the UK population are dyslexic, according to the British Dyslexia Association. As many who suffer with dyslexia will know, simply reading one page of a book can leave you feeling mentally exhausted. Andrew found his school years tough because he had to battle through reading on a daily basis.

When Andrew became a Christian in his early 20’s, reading the Bible was also a constant mental battle. In his own words he describes a normal layout Bible:

“…the size/design/layout are all awful for someone like me to use. I simply can’t read/write/retain quickly enough; so sometimes I have to read a sentence over and over 10 times before I can even remotely remember what I’ve read.”

It wasn’t until Andrew was at New Horizon, a large Christian festival in Northern Ireland, that he heard about the Accessible Bible. It was such an emotional experience for Andrew when he first got his hands on a copy.

Aspects like the colour of the paper, the font and the wording, enabled Andrew to be able to read the Bible without feeling tired from concentrating for the first time in his life! He managed to read the entire New Testament in just two months, and sometimes would find himself reading for up to two hours at any one time!

It was an emotional experience opening this book and realising that wow this book really is for me…FOR ME!

What a wonderful story! We thank Andrew for sharing this with us.

At Biblica we remain committed to ensuring that everyone has access to a Bible they can call their own, so that lives can be changed when reading this life– changing book!

Please pray for us as we develop this Bible into the Old Testament in the future so that people like Andrew can have the full Bible in an accessible format.

Cameron’s story

Cameron, originally from Scotland, lives in Northern Ireland and is the leader of a Torch Trust Fellowship Group in Belfast. Cameron lives with a physical disability called Spastic Diplegia and is partially sighted with sight only in one eye.

Cameron committed his life to Jesus when he was 19 years old and tells us of his amazing journey of faith ever since. In 2012 God placed a vision on Cameron’s soul to see revival in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. In response, Cameron has created Revival Sparks Ministries. He is working to gather people in a very informal way to create a community of people who catch the vision and join him in the revival journey.

Due to his sight issues, reading God’s Word has been a struggle for Cameron. When Cameron first got his hands on a copy of the NIrV Accessible Edition he told us:

My first impression was, it’s a big book! But once I opened it the first thing that struck me was the page colour– it helps to lift the print a bit and enables the words to stand out off the page, which is good for me as I only have one working eye. It is written in an easier language so it touches my heart more quickly!

The Accessible Bible has strengthened Cameron’s faith and he is excited to share it with many others with sight impairments.

We thank Cameron for sharing his story with us. If you would like more information on Torch Trust you can visit their website.

We will leave you with Cameron’s own words about the Accessible Bible:

Thank you Biblica for producing this Bible and for spending time and money on bringing God’s Word in such an easy format to read and understand.

Kim’s story

Kim is a typical fun loving, live–life–to–the–full, fifteen–year–old! Everyone who knows her talks about her kind heart and her big smile. She enjoys riding horses, swimming, playing badminton and loves books. Kim has big dreams for her future– to be a wildlife photographer and artist.

Kim spent the first seven and a half years of her life in Thailand, with some of that time spent in Rainbow House, run by Christian Care for the Disabled. She has an acquired brain injury, which has resulted in left–hand sided hemiplegia and epilepsy. But she hasn’t let this stop her! She is a girl who gives everything a go and never gives up! We count it a privilege to have met her and to tell her story.

As a lover of books, Kim enjoyed discovering the wonderful stories of Narnia written by CS Lewis. She fell in love with the character of Aslan, and after watching the DVD one evening made a commitment to Jesus and asked him to come into her life. Now with the support of her home church Ballyholme Presbyterian in Bangor, Northern Ireland and Scripture Union camps, her faith is nurtured, and she has wonderful people who pray for her.

Her mother, Heather has been reading the Jesus Storybook Bible to her every night, to help Kim understand and remember the story of creation, the fall, and God’s plan of Salvation. Heather spent years trying to find an age–appropriate Bible she could read herself, but ran out of options.

It wasn’t until a kind friend gifted Kim with an NIrV Accessible Edition that things started to change. Heather recalls the time when Kim first saw it:

‘As usual our curious Kim opened up the Bible in the back of the car to take a look. After a few quiet moments, I could hear her start to read it. Then she yelled, “Mummy, Mummy! I can read it; I can read my Bible!” ‘

Kim and her friend
Kim and her friend

Being able to read independently is so special to Kim, and an answer to prayer too. She is more interested in the Bible, knows the stories so well and that knowledge will enable her to focus on the text and boost her reading skills. Kim can now bring her Bible to youth group at church and read it just like her friends can. This is just so precious!

As a literacy support teacher, Heather was pleasantly surprised to find that the Bible was able to combine an adult flow to the sentences and bring down the level of reading required at the same time. She felt like the Bible passages seemed no different to what she reads herself in her own Bible.

At Biblica, we want Kim’s story to be replicated throughout the UK. We count it an enormous privilege to work alongside our partners in developing the Accessible Bible to make sure that God’s Word is open and accessible to everyone.

We plan to share more stories with you of the real difference an Accessible Bible can make to people in evangelism, personal discipleship and deepening of their faith.

To finish we want to share Kim’s mother’s words when we asked her about the impact the Accessible Bible has had on her daughter and her family:

“The Accessible Bible has become the means of unlocking the joy, peace and strength that comes from being able to search the scriptures, for those who can find reading difficult. It has become a means of unifying friends who in other areas of life enjoy the same things, in the ability to share in Bible studies together. This has been so important for Kim as a teenage girl, longing to be part of the group. Thank you Biblica for making this happen.”
